part of NDGenWeb
Named for the railroad executive, Frederick H. Billings (1823-1890), the county was created by the territorial legislature in 1879. Medora, founded in 1883 by The Marquis de Mores, has been the county seat since 1886. Area 1151 square miles. 2000 population -- 888. Home of the Badlands and Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Theodore Roosevelt hunted buffalo and ranched near Medora in the 1880s. His experience left an indelible mark. He said "I have always said I would not have been President had it not been for my experience in North Dakota."
Please email the Acting State Coordinator if you are interested in being a county coordinator.
