Cass County was defined by action of the Dakota Territory legislature on January 4, 1873, and its organization was affected on October 27 of that year. It was named for railroad executive George Washington Cass (1810 - 1888). Its boundaries were altered in 1875, and in 1961. State of North Dakota with Cass County highlighted:
