DEATH CLAIMS N. P. VETERAN EARLY TODAY

Fred Parker, 65, Drops Dead of Heart Attack

Funeral Rites at 2 P.M. Friday

    N. P. Railroad Over Forty Years

While weighing cars in front of the Northern Pacific depot this morning about 2 o'clock, Fred Parker, 65 veteran N. P. employe, dropped dead as a result of heart trouble. Mr. Parker, who has been with the railroad for over 40 years here seemingly enjoyed good health and was very active until the time of his death.

His first position with the railroad here was that of a fireman, but for the last few years he has been employed as a car clerk. Since a youth he has been connected with railway work, being employed by the Michigan Central line before coming here, with his headquarters at Saginaw, Michigan.

Maria Dunahey of Mandan became the wife of Mr. Parker in 1888. Their children are Fred, Mandan; Mrs. Frank Kirby, Dickinson; and John J. of Laurel, Mont. Both sons are in the employ of the Northern Pacific, Fred as brakeman and John as a train clerk. Since the death of his wife in 1918, Mr. Parker has lived with his son, Fred, at the Frank Lehman home, 203 Second avenue N.E. His brother, Rule, lives in Vermont and a brother-in-law, Charles Dunahey, in Bismarck.

Mr. Parker was born and educated in Brandon, Vermont. He belonged to the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks, the Switchman's Union of North America and the Yeoman Lodge.

Coming from a musically talented family, Mr. Parker centered a good deal of his outside time to the promoting of home talent entertainment when he first came to Mandan. Like his mother, who gave piano lessons until she was 83 years of age, Mr. Parker played the piano a great deal. He had charge of many of the Mandan home talent music events that were given in the old opera house and took some of them to neighboring towns, such as Bismarck and Dickinson. For the last 20 years Mr. Parker has not sponsored any such events but has always kept up his interest in music.

Mrs. Kirby from Dickinson arrived in Mandan today and John will come from Laurel, Mont., tomorrow morning. Funeral services will be held from the Methodist church at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon with Rev. F. G. Norris officiating.

Pallbearers will be Con Waddell, Anton Froelich, Marvin Olson, Dennis Tobin, Wm. Stabler, and Pete Wagner.
