COUNTY FORMATION

Hettinger County was first formed in 1883, from the southern portion of Stark County. It was named in honor of Mathias K. Hettinger, who was a banker and public figure in Freeport, Illinois. The county boundaries changed, the county was dissolved, and the county was re-established at various times.

"Hettinger county was organized April 17, 1907. It comprises the territory included between the north boundary of Adams county on the south and the ninth standard parallel on the north, and between the line between ranges 90 and 91 on the east and the line between ranges 97 and 98 on the west." --Collections of the State Historical Society of North Dakota by State Historical Society of North Dakota, 1923, Volume 5, page 238
